Search has fundamentally changed in the last 18 months. Customers used to type a query into Google, scan ten blue links, and click the most relevant one. Now a growing percentage type the same query into ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity and get a synthesised answer that cites two or three sources.
If your business is not in those citations, you are invisible to a fast-growing search audience. This is the new SEO frontier, and most Sunshine Coast businesses are not paying attention to it yet.
How AI search actually works
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best digital marketing agency on the Sunshine Coast, the model does a few things in parallel. It checks its training data for relevant entities. It runs a real-time web search. It reads and synthesises the top results. It produces an answer that names specific businesses and links to them.
Claude does something similar through its web search tool. Perplexity is built around this exact pattern from the ground up. Google itself has launched AI Overviews, which work the same way.
The implication is significant. To get cited, you have to be one of the sources the AI reads when generating its answer. That is a different optimisation target than ranking number one in the traditional sense.
What actually drives AI citations
Topical authority. AI models favour sources that demonstrably know their subject. Publishing one blog post about Google Ads is not authority. Publishing twenty interconnected pieces that cover the topic from every angle is. The model learns to treat you as the primary source on that topic.
Structured data and schema markup. JSON-LD schema tells AI crawlers exactly what kind of entity you are, what services you provide, where you are located, and who to attribute content to. LocalBusiness, Service, Person, and FAQPage schema are all read by AI models during training and real-time retrieval.
Genuine citations on other sites. If Perplexity searches for digital marketing agencies on the Sunshine Coast and finds three authoritative local directories, three industry publications, and your own site all mentioning your business, the weighting toward citing you goes up dramatically. Traditional link building, done properly, still matters.
Content that directly answers questions. AI models are designed to answer questions. Content that mirrors the question-and-answer format, with specific, direct language and genuine depth, is more likely to be retrieved and cited than content written around keyword density.
Entity consistency. Your business name, address, phone number, and category should be identical across every online presence: your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, industry directories, and schema markup. Entity confusion reduces citation confidence.
The practical implementation
Start with a proper schema audit. Add LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Person schema to every relevant page. Make sure your Google Business Profile is complete, has recent reviews, and is being actively posted to.
Build a content plan around the questions your customers actually ask. Not the generic versions, the specific ones. "How much does Google Ads cost on the Sunshine Coast" beats "Google Ads pricing" for AI citation purposes because AI models retrieve content that directly matches conversational queries.
Pursue genuine editorial mentions. Local business press, industry publications, and community pages that mention your business as a named entity increase the probability of AI retrieval.
Track your citations. Search for your category on Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude monthly. Note who gets cited and why. Reverse-engineer the pattern from the sources that consistently appear.
The honest timeline
AI Search Optimisation is not a quick fix. The citation profile that makes you appear consistently in AI answers builds over six to twelve months of systematic effort. But the businesses starting now are building an advantage that will compound significantly as AI search continues to displace traditional search behaviour.
The businesses that are still waiting to start will find that the default answers AI gives have already settled, and displacing an entrenched citation is harder than building one from scratch.
